Lesson Planner
Plan 4-week teaching blocks by class, with technique assignment by grade and Sifu / Coach / Assistant Instructor / Instructor (Cover) / Leader role allocation per technique. Each week is planned in one of two modes — Plan by Technique (below) or Plan by Student — chosen per week, never mixed within a week.

Creating a plan
- Go to Admin → Lesson Planner
- Select a class from the accordion list — each class shows the student type, day, time, and number of enrolled students
- Tap New Plan — a 4-week block is created with today's date as Week 1
- For each week, assign techniques from the curriculum (automatically filtered to the grades present in that class)
- Assign teaching roles to each technique (see below)
- Tap Save Plan

Each week has a mode switch — Plan by Technique or Plan by Student — at the top. The sections below (Technique assignment, Staff roles, By Teacher view) describe Plan by Technique, the original mode; see Plan by Student further down for the alternative. Switching a week's mode keeps whatever you'd built in the other mode saved but hidden — nothing is lost, and a week is never both at once.
Technique assignment
Techniques shown in the planner are filtered to only those relevant to the grades of students enrolled in that class — you won't see techniques from grades that no one in the class is working towards.
Each technique row shows the grade it belongs to as a coloured sash pill.
Snakes & Cranes classes are limited to a maximum of 2 technique types per session. All other class types allow up to 3.
Staff roles
Every technique in the plan can be assigned to one or more staff members:
| Role | Colour | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Sifu | Red | Leads this technique — the senior instructor |
| Coach | Navy | Coaches this technique |
| Assistant Instructor | Red (same as Sifu) | Coaches this technique — treated the same as Coach for grouping, deliberately given Sifu's red rather than its own colour |
| Instructor (Cover) | Amber | Coaches this technique — treated the same as Coach for grouping, with its own distinct colour so a stand-in instructor is obvious at a glance |
| Leader | White (outlined) | Supports the Coach, Assistant Instructor, Instructor (Cover), or Sifu for this technique |
Tap a staff member's pill to toggle their assignment. Staff are drawn from the class's staff assignments — only instructors assigned to that class appear.
By Teacher view
Switch to By Teacher to see the plan grouped by staff member rather than by technique. This is useful for briefing your team before class:
- Sifu's techniques are listed under their name
- Coaches, Assistant Instructors, and Instructors (Cover) each own the non-Sifu techniques they are assigned to, each getting their own group
- Leaders appear as "With:" pills supporting a Sifu, Coach, Assistant Instructor, or Instructor (Cover) group
Week dates
Each week has a date picker. Week 1 defaults to today; Weeks 2–4 default to +7, +14, and +21 days. Dates are editable — adjust them to match your actual class schedule.
Reopening a saved plan starts any week dated before today collapsed — already-taught weeks stay out of the way, and the current/upcoming weeks are visible straight away. Tap a week's header to expand it.
Saving plans
Tap Save Plan to write all four weeks and all role assignments to the database in one step. All assignments are buffered locally until you save — navigating away without saving will lose changes.
Multiple plans can be saved per class. Previously saved plans appear in the class accordion — tap one to reopen and edit it.
Plan by Student
For when different students in the same class need to work on different things in the same session — some on form, others on strikes — rather than the whole class doing the same technique together.
Switch a week to Plan by Student. It has the same number of timed slots as Plan by Technique (2 for Snakes & Cranes, 3 for everyone else), but within a slot you work differently:
- Tap + Add technique type to open a group for that category (Strikes, Kicks, Blocks, Form, Footwork, Other, or Monthly Drills) — a category can only be opened once per slot
- Tap names under Not assigned in this slot to place students into it. With more than one group open in the slot, tapping toggles a student into a selection — tap another name to add them too, then tap the group they should all join together. With only one group open, tapping a name places them straight in
- Repeat for a second (and third) technique type in the same slot if different students need something different at the same time
- Move to the next slot and repeat
Each group shows only the techniques its own students need for their next sash — not the whole class's — so a Strikes group of two Orange-graded students never sees a Green student's strike technique. Assign Sifu/Coach/Assistant Instructor/Instructor (Cover)/Leader to each technique exactly as in Plan by Technique (see Staff roles above); By Teacher view groups a Plan by Student week's techniques by staff member the same way too.
A student can only be in one group per slot, but can be in a different group in a different slot. Tap the × on a student's pill to send them back to Not assigned. Tap Remove on a group to delete it (its students return to Not assigned) and free up that technique type to be reopened.
Slots and technique groups are individually collapsible (tap the header) — handy once a week fills up. A collapsed section still prints in full either way.
Printing
Two print buttons produce a clean, mat-ready layout — every week always lands on exactly one page, however dense that week's techniques get:
- A4 Print — landscape A4, one week per page. Techniques flow into columns whose count adapts to how many techniques that week has, so a light week and a dense week both use the page well.
- A5 Print — portrait A4, two weeks per page (Week 1 above Week 2, Week 3 above Week 4, and so on). Week 2 always starts at the exact halfway point of the page regardless of how much content Week 1 has, so the printed sheet can be folded in half into two A5 halves.
Both use the same underlying layout — column density, row spacing, fonts — just at different page sizes.
